I am obsessed with patterns. My artwork reflects this obsession. No two pieces are exactly the same. I like to introduce at least one or two new patterns in every piece of work.
I am not sure when my obsession started. I’ve always had an active imagination. I remember as a child being in the car and it raining. My eyes lost in the patterns of the raindrops on the window. As long as I can remember, my eyes sought out patterns and once found my imagination would take it from there. As I got older, I still turned to the thrill of patterns but never really thought about the why until I started drawing. My hand became part of the obsession of my eyes and insisted on creating things with loads of patterns. Now that my hand and eye have joined forces, I am constantly on the look out for what my hand will draw next. I find them in nature, pictures, a rug, decor, the garden, architecture and everywhere I go. My collection of patterns is a never ending story. Patterns have been a part of human kind since they first began to draw or decorate. I love walking through museums or paging through books and seeing the ancient patterns. They decorate pots, cookware, homes, tools and clothes. The longer I steep in patterns the more I ask why? We fill our homes with patterned objects. Even our phones today are encased in patterned holders. I don’t know the answer to the why but I am enjoying the journey along that question. And a big part of the journey, is creating pattered works for others to ask why and get lost in their imagination guided by my patterns.
