I am a self-taught artist who has lived and worked across the country, owning an art store, traveling to festivals and currently transforming her drawings into wearable art and accessories. My artwork consists of ink, marker and colored pencil. The tiles are painted with underglazes and then glazed and fired. Some pieces are heavily layered with an almost collage effect. The viewer is led in by the overall work to take a deeper look and get lost in the varied textures. This allows for a desire to keep looking and finding all the different pieces and patterns that resonate with them. Some pieces are more simple but still with a sense of mystery and desire to look closer. They tell enough of a story to start the viewer on their own journey. The relationship of women and mythology is one theme. My work explores the ways in which mythology and folk lore has shaped women and been shaped by women. The female form is paired with a mythological form to convey the different roles, emotions and life stages and history of women. This in turn explores the female element of the mythological creature .One purpose is to get the viewer to put an image to the themes in their own life and allow that image to take its own meaning for their life. It is to engage with the themes that have influenced our world. The tiles are a snapshot of the natural world around us. A tribute to the preservation of our natural world. The Mandala tiles speak to the unity and harmony that we strive to achieve as women. They represent a guide to enlightenment and healing much as women carry that same role.
